Things to Consider Before Hiring a Webmaster

In the last year I have had two clients who nearly had a fiasco with their websites because when their webmaster built the sites they also registered the URL under their own name. So when they wanted to build a new website with another provider in both cases it was very stressful.

This even happened to me a few years ago and in the end I had to can the website, and the URL and start from scratch. Luckily for me I was able to purchase www.debcarr.com so it turned out for the better. I'm not going to explain here what to do if this happens to you because it's quite a lengthy process, however here is a good article I found online: Read More

Things to consider before you hire someone to build a website for you.

  • Always create your own account with a domain host i.e. Crazy Domains, Go Daddy or similar. Make sure that it's your email address and contact. Then you can share the password with your webmaster when it comes to pointing the domain to the website.

  • Likewise, make sure that your website is set up in YOUR name and email address. For example if you are using website design like WIX, create your own account and give the log in to your webmaster.

  • If your webmaster is purchasing stock photos - again, create your own account with Adobe or Shutterstock in your name, so that you own the licence to use the photos.

  • Make sure you have an agreement in writing with your webmaster, exactly what is expected. This protects both of you.

  • Same goes for social media platforms always ensure they are registered in your name and email.

These may seem like simple steps to follow, but believe me I have worked with many small business people who would not have even thought of this. Your website and online presence is an asset, so make sure you are in full control.

Why not build your own website?

These days building websites is easy especially with wix and Wordpress.

You can build a website in four steps:

Use the SiteBuilder platform which is simple but extremely advanced in getting your website up and running with plugins, domain, keyword search and easy to follow steps. If you sign up to Wealthy Affiliate there are free tutorials on building an online business as well as paid subscription which gives you all the training you need to establish your website and get it found on the search engines. I am a premium member and not only does this site help me make money, it's a fantastic online community who share knowledge and help others.

Step One

Choosing what type of website you want

There are really TWO options here, on a FREE website or on your OWN domain. Ideally, you will have your own domain, but that can come with time. Personally I would always have my own domain, it is far more professional and trustworthy. In fact I own three websites.

You can "register" your very own domains right within Wealthy Affiliate using our state of the art SiteDomains platform, which will allow you to instantly set-up your own domain for your own use. If you are signing up to Wealthy Affiliate you can build up to 50 websites which is what you would do if you seriously wanted to make a multi million dollar online business.

Step Two

Choose your Domain name (URL). Think carefully about this as you want to try and get as descriptive as you can about what your site is about. For this website I have used my own name, and that's perfectly ok but I could have also searched for domain that had the words social media in it. Domains are getting harder to buy these days as so many people are online and other buy domains and sit on them to sell at an inflated price later.

Step Three

Choose a website name. Try to keep this in line with your URL. For instance on my blog Sydney Chic is the name and www.sydneychic.com.au is the URL.

Step Four

Choose a template. With SiteRubix starters can choose from 12 themes. They are easy to use and the instructions are simple. You choose the theme and follow the prompts. If you upgrade you can have access to 2,464 designs.

Hosting

This website is hosted by WIX which I pay an annual fee of around $150 if you prefer the Wordpress theme, SiteRubix will host. SiteRubix is a powerful hosting service, which is secure and fast.

This is a screenshot of how you start to build your site on SiteRubix.
