SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) basically means getting your website, ranking well on Google and being found for your keywords (search terms). Many people believe that because they have hired a designer and created a website that clients will automatically find them. Wrong! SEO is a skill that takes patience and knowledge so it is best to hire someone to help you. This post is to give you a basic understanding of how it works.
Say you have a yoga practice in Sydney and you have just launched your brand-new website. You create your own search, "yoga practice Sydney" and guess what? You do not show up! The reason is that you have a lot of competition using that identical keyword (search term). By the way we count 'yoga practice Sydney' as one keyword.
You could narrow it down to "yoga practice Parramatta", which is a little more niched but still ambitious. Maybe you could narrow it down to 'yoga practice' for mature adults Parramatta". Now you might possibly be getting somewhere.
Finding the appropriate keywords for your website is a process, you can use tools to help you such as Google Keyword Tool. They do not come cheap, though so do your research to find one to fit your budget.
You will want to be putting your keywords in your pages on your website as well as the Title and Meta Descriptions. See video below.
Wix has a built-in SEO plan that is easy to use and helpful to get your site ready to be found on Google.
PROVIDE USEFUL CONTENT ON YOUR WEBSITE
Content marketing is a way to attract customers to your website, but it has to be relevant and helpful. Wix provides an excellent blog platform (I have been blogging on Wix since 2013 www.sydneychic.com.au) as well I have two others www.thejasmineintheforest.com and www.northcoastnswlifestyle.com.au and the platform is easy to use. Even for a novice!
You might want to create a blogging calendar so you keep yourself on track and have a list of headlines that you will write about. Here's the concept, though, make sure it is only in your area of expertise and it is a good fit with your website. You can then share your posts on social media to help drive traffic back to your site.
Remember to keep your using your keywords in your content.
WATCH YOUR HEADINGS
When writing articles for your posts you need to think about the headings that are relevant to attracting your clients. As an example, you could write "Five Tips for Flexibility in Yoga for Mature Adults". However, when you publish this your URL will look like this www.yourwebsite.com/five-tips-for-flexibility-in-yoga-for-mature-adults. As you can picture that is lengthy so you can go into your page setup and change it to www.yourwebsite.com/yoga-flexibility or something relevant like that.
With Wix you can easily update your SEO on blog pages. See video below.
OPTIMISE YOUR PHOTOS
As you already know when you create a search on Google you have the option to search for images. Now, this is where you must be vigilant in using your keywords as ALT tag this is how you use keywords for your images. Do this on every image used in your website. See Video Below Graphic.
LINKS COMING IN
As I mentioned in my video I receive requests daily for links or guest posts on my website www.sydneychic.com.au because the site ranks well locally and it is beneficial for other websites to get a link back from my site. Google perceives that my website (which is ranking well) identifies your website as something worth linking back too so it must be dependable!
To get links back from other sites is no easy task either and that is why there are many blogger outreach companies that people pay to hopefully get their article or link published on an authority site.
As I mentioned, this is not an SEO lesson in any way, it is just to give you an understanding if you are new to how search engine optimisation works. I highly recommend you check out Brian Dean if you want to learn more. I do not get any kickbacks for recommending Brian, I just love his work, and he shares a lot.
